About This Item

London: A & C Black. Very Good+ in Very Good+ dust jacket. 1933. First Edition. Hardcover. With 4 maps, 3 of which are folding, dustjacket is chipped at spine ends and sun faded on the spine, book slightly canted and dusty. The chief English authority on his subject, on which he has written widely in both English and Portuguese, gives in an attractive form the results of his researches on the great explorations whereby Portugal led Europe out of medival speculation to the threshold of modern knowledge in a vast area of world geography. The expeditions comprise those which revealed Madeira, the Azores and the Cape Verde islands, the coasts of Africa and Brazil, the sea passages to India, Malaya, the Spice Islands, China and Japan. The leaders and organizers include such pioneers as Prince Henry the Navigator, Diogo Cäo, Cadamosto, Bartholomew Dias and Vascoda Gama, great names which in this book become living personalities. The book will be welcomed by the general reader for its romantic interest, and by the student of history as the only work in English which gives the subject complete treatment. ; The Pioneer Histories; 225 x 145mm; xiv, 352 pages .
