New York: Random House, 1969. Near fine in very good jacket, near fine slipcase.. Signed limited first edition of one of Roth's best, most-loved, and most controversial novels. Roth's much-praised, much-hated, much-discussed comic novel detailing the familial, sexual, scatological, spiritual, and other travails of the eponymous narrator. Donaldson is the author of respected biographies of Hemingway and Fitzgerald, and authored a 1970 article on Roth in the journal Contemporary Literature. "This is the novel which is said to do for masturbation what Melville did for the whale" (Anthony Burgess). The limited edition is quite scarce in both the original jacket and slipcase. 8.25'' x 5.5''. Original cream textured cloth, spine and front board stamped in gilt. In original cream dust jacket. In original red paper slipcase with number handwritten to spine (83). Red endpapers, red top edge, fore-edge machine deckle. [10], 274, [2] pages. Signed by Roth on limitation page, numbered 83. Jacket with toned spine, uneven toning around joints. Book clean with only light toning to spine.

Synopsis

In 1997 Philip Roth won the Pulitzer Prize for American Pastoral . In 1998 he received the National Medal of Arts at the White House and in 2002 the highest award of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Gold Medal in Fiction. He has twice won the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award. He has won the PEN/Faulkner Award three times. In 2005 The Plot Against America received the Society of American Historians’ Prize for “the outstanding historical novel on an American theme for 2003-2004.” Recently Roth received PEN’s two most prestigious awards: in 2006 the PEN/Nabokov Award and in 2007 the PEN/Bellow Award for achievement in American fiction. Roth is the only living American novelist to have his work published in a comprehensive, definitive edition by the Library of America. In 2011 he received the National Humanities Medal at the White House, and was later named the fourth recipient of the Man Booker International Prize.
