London : REEVE & CO, 1853 Popular British Ornithology is part of Reeve's Popular Natural History series which was produced to give young students a proper grounding in natural history subjects. This title is Gosse's only work on British Birds and is a beautifully put together study looking at the birds that an observer might see in each month of the year. It is a relatively rare title in what is becoming a hard to find series. This is a very good copy of the second edition which was identical to the first with 20 hand coloured plates of birds. The plate list is slightly confusing because the frontispiece is not numbered and plate 14 is placed earlier than it should be. The binding is particularly bright - with purple cloth and a gilt decoration of two birds and a nest on the front board and the hallmark gilt decoration to the spine. There is an ink signature of Frederick Lawrence, 1862, on the title page. Contents, including plates are clean and and bright. The contents are becoming slightly loose and the front endpaper is splitting - an endpaper repair would probably remedy both.

ABOUT THIS BOOK: From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Gulf, a sweeping cultural and natural history of the bald eagle in America. The bald eagle is regal but fearless, a bird you're not inclined to argue with. For centuries, Americans have celebrated it as "majestic" and "noble," yet savaged the living bird behind their national symbol as a malicious predator of livestock and, falsely, a snatcher of babies. Description:
Rising from sandbars on the Platte River with clarion calls, the sandhill crane (Grus canadensis) feels the urgency of spring migration. Elegant, noble, and spiritual, the sandhill crane is one of the most ancient of all birds. More than a half-million strong, flying in squadrons, these majestic creatures point northward to their Arctic and sub-Arctic breeding ranges. Theirs is an epic story of endurance through the ages. With 153 stunning color photographs, On Ancient Wings presents sandhill cranes in their wild but increasingly compromised habitats today. Over the course of five years, Michael Forsberg documented the tall gray birds in habitats ranging from the Alaskan tundra, to the arid High Plains, from Cuban nature preserves to suburban backyards. With an eye for beauty and an uncommon persistence, the author documents the cranes' challenges to adapt and survive in a rapidly changing natural world. Forsberg argues that humankind, for its own sake, should secure the cranes' place in the future.… Read More
