Softcover/NF w/price sticker to rear. Frontispiece: Portrait of Chenier. Selected poems of Andre Chenier (1762 - 1794) w/biographical, historical and literary annotations by Maury Paul. 87 pgs. French, hero, poet and political journalist Andre Chenier, noted for emotive verse, is ranked a major early poet of the Romantic movement. He was executed by the guillotine during the French Revolution for "crimes against the state" near the end of the Reign of Terror. The first collection of his poetry appeared 1819, some 25 years after his death, to great public acclaim and, his life, became a European symbol of the poet-hero. Strong copy.
