About This Item

London: Lock, Ward, and Co.. Hardcover. Very Good. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. 12mo. 282 pages. A small book measuring 6 1/4 inches tall by nearly 4 1/4 inches wide. Hardcover beautifully bound in full plum leather with elaborate gilt designs on the front cover and the spine. The front cover has a gilt-embossed armorial crest. Dark green label pastedown on the spine, which has 5 raised bands and elaborate gilt tooling in the compartments. Binding has light scuffing/rubbing. All edges of text block are marbled. Prior owner's inscription on second front flyleaf: "Annie Jobson Form V Alternative Science Prize, June 1895". Text is toned but generally clean. There is no copyright date. The Preface is dated 1847, but we suspect this volume was printed about the time is was presented as a prize in 1895. The crest on the front cover is for the "Worshipful Company of Skinners" of London (a guild of Livery Companies granted a royal charter in 1327). It shows a shield with a cat and a dog on either side and with a dog standing atop a helmet at the top. The shield has three crowns and the motto beneath reads, "To God Only Be All Glory". This guild supports several schools in the region.
