London: Smith, Elder, & Co., 1891. Leather. Very Good. 6" by 4" . None . A selection of the works of Robert Browning in one pocket sized volume rebound in attractive full calf. An anthology containing a selection from Robert Browning's poetical works. A foremost Victorian poet known for his dramatic monologues, use of irony, dark humour, and social commentary, he was the husband of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, fellow noted poet.This volume belonged to Colonel H. Jane H. Sewell, H.M. Indian Army, with his bookplate to front pastedown. It was gifted to him by a friend nicknamed 'Hattie,' with her gift inscription to title page, dated 1896; her original photograph was tipped in to verso advertising leaf to frontispiece, inscribed in ink with a quote from Omar Khayyam:"For some we loved, the "sweetest" and the best / That from his Vintage rolling Time hath prest, Have drunk their Cup a Round or two before, / And one by one crept silently to rest." Rebound in charming full calf binding with five raised bands, titles in gilt to morocco spine label. Decorative embossing to boards. Externally smart with minor shelf wear, back strip darkened, with some marks to boards. Internally, firmly bound. Light minor spotting to first and last few leaves, pages otherwise bright and clean.
