About This Item

1572 PLUTARCH Parallel Lives Latin & GREEK Alexander Great 5v FAMED Estienne

"The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled."

― Plutarch

'Plutarch's Lives' or 'Parallel Lives' is one of the most important and comprehensive collection of biographies of famous Greek and Roman figures. Plutarch was not so much focused on providing a historical account of these famous individuals as much as he was seeking to write of the type of person they were and the life in which they lived. He focuses on Alexander the Great, Romulus and Remus, Demosthenes, Cicero, Brutus, Julius Caesar, and many other important figures.

This rare undated 16th-century edition was edited and translated by Wilhelm Xylander, a notable German scholar and published by the famed Henri Estienne. Xylander was well known for his commentary and edits of Greek and Roman masters found in these volumes including Fabius Maximus, Timoleon, Pelopidas, and many others.
