About This Item

London: Cassell Peter & Galpin, c1885. Leather. Very Good. 9" by 7". Alfred Rimmer. The second edition of Rimmer's richly illustrated volume on Oxford, in a handsome half calf prize binding. In a half calf prize binding, with the gilt crest of Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School, Wakefield, to the front board. There is a bookplate to the front paste down, awarding this prize-bound volume to H. Sanderson, dated 1885. 20 plates and further woodcut engravings accompanying the text. Alfred Rimmer (1829-1893) was an artist and author who wrote and illustrated several works on British towns and architecture. This second edition of his Rimmer's book on Oxford explores picturesque scenery around this city and the history of various areas, such as Abingdon, and buildings, such as Blenheim Palace. It also contains beautiful woodcut engravings of Oxford architecture and countryside from Rimmer's own drawings. In a half calf prize binding. Externally very smart, with a little rubbing to the spine and extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with some spotting to the first and last few pages, and the odd spot throughout. Very Good
