About This Item
A. L. Burt (1900), 1900. Hardcover. Good/No Dj. 12 mo. hardcover maroon cloth,. No date. Circa early 20th Century. Top pages edged in gilt. 536 pp. including glossary and index, notes, plus ads at back. Front hinge cracked else good. First published in 1822. based roughly on the life of John Gow who features as Captain Cleveland.[1] The setting is the southern tip of the main island of Shetland (which Scott visited in 1814), towards the end of the 17th century, with 1689 as the likely date of the main incidents. Adapted for stage. The scenery is delightful, the shipwreck well managed, and the engagement between the pirate vessel and the Halcyon sloop of war, allowed by the audience to be most admirable.
