Shelford developed the concept of ecological succession of animals, and he was among the first to consider food webs, the intricate interrelationships in feeding habits that ultimately determine species composition and community structure. During WW I Shelford examined the effects of industrial pollution on fish, natural resources, and public health; his work marked the beginnings of water polluction biology .
