About This Item

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1857. 8vo, pp. [iii]-xxiv, [1], 26-360; full-page map and 3 diagrams in the text (identified as plates I-IV), full page table, and 9 folding maps and tables at the back depicting a vertical section of the Atlantic, depth chart, paths of hurricanes, sea drifts and whales, winds and routes, the gulf stream, and a pilot's sheet; original brown cloth, gilt-stamped on upper cover and spine; spine a little dull but in all a near fine copy. Considered the first textbook of modern oceanography, this work was among the first to recognize the sea as a separate branch of science, with distinct problems of its own. Maury was a distinguished naval officer and a prolific writer on oceanography and naval subjects; he was instrumental in establishing an international system of recording oceanographic data, based on the worldwide cooperation of naval vessels and the merchant marine. This work went through many editions; an enlarged second edition was also published in 1855. This edition, with introductions to both the first and sixth editions, is likely just that - the sixth - with expanded chapters on the Gulf Stream, salinity, the Arctic Ocean, and the Atlantic basin. A new chapter on land and sea breezes has been newly incorporated, and extensive contributions on monsoons, trade winds, and cyclones have been added. Sabin 46969.
