About This Item
Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1882. Hardcover. Poorish, but it contains all four original sepia photographs in good condition, and is also the more useful "second revised" edition; this second contains Forbes' additions to his mariner's life of experiences in China (a huge addition to text) and especially, on the opium war (we cannot say if Forbes was more than an observer). And on gold rush San Francisco as well, at the time when arriving ships were sunk to support fill, and housing built on top. As to the condition, it is ex library with accession and deaccession labels, a badly uglified spine, badly cracked hinges, bindery thread at risk, signatures begun to start. The four photos look rather like photos of other photos and not like originals; whatever they are, all are reproduced in washed-out sepia. Not a great item but we couldn't throw it away, and it is sufficiently sound to be "a reading copy
