London: Lawrence & Bullen, 1897. Hard Cover. 312 pages. 'Ser Giovanni's collection, begun in 1378 and finished after 1385, derives its title, Il pecorone, 'the numbskull'-- a title probably not due to the author-- from the fact that so many pecoroni appear in the book. The frame story tells of a chaplain and a nun who on 25 successive days meet in a convent parlor, each telling the other a story each day. About half the stories are fictional; the other half are drawn from the Chronaca of Giovanni Villani. Many of the tales are stupid, but a few are definitely good. The best, that of Giannetto and the Lady of Belmonte, embodies the 'pound of flesh' motif in an excellent plot, from which Shakespeare derived, directly or indirectly, the 'pound of flesh' portion of the plot of The Merchant of Venice' (Wilkins). 110 copies printed of which this is number 95. Printed on 'Japanese vellum.' Good copy, vellum spine soiled, nicked at bottom. Stock#OB312.

"The greatest thing in the world is to know how to belong to oneself."
― Michel de Montaigne, Essays
First published in 1580, the Essays of Michel de Montaigne were a collection of essays and writings on a variety of topics and content. Montaigne was rather decisive in his rhetoric and used various Ancient Greek, Latin, and Italian texts as examples and references, such as Lucretius and Plutarch quotations. Montaigne himself stated that the goal of his essays was to describe man with 'utter frankness and honesty.' According to the scholar Paul Oskar Kristeller,
"the writers of the period were keenly aware of the miseries and ills of our earthly existence".
Montaigne sought to break man down into his basic features, which, at the time, was extreme volatility. He wrote on marriage being an absolute necessity for raising children, but he also quoted, in the 'Essays,' that "Marriage is like a cage; one sees the birds… Read More

"Human it is to have compassion on the unhappy"
― Giovanni Boccaccio
Giovanni Boccaccio was a 14th-century Italian poet and important humanist during the Renaissance. Following the popularity and successes of 'The Decameron' in 1351, Boccaccio wrote 'Il Corbaccio' a few years later – a story which never reached the fame of 'The Decameron'. Still, the work is a prime example of 14th-century romanticism, following the story of a man yearning for the love a widow and his being haunted by Death in a dream.
This 1536 Italian edition, published under by the name 'Labyrinth of Love', was published in Venice, collected and edited by Pino de Rossi.

"Honest and reliable service - every book hand-packaged with care."
Contracts are the most informative records we have about the nature of commissioning prestigious works of art in the Renaissance. This book provides a framework for interpreting these important documents by surveying a body of contracts and related records concerning altarpieces and frescoes painted in Italy from the early fourteenth to the early sixteenth centuries.
Michelle O'Malley structures her inquiry around a trio of fundamental questions concerning the language of contracts, the ramifications of stipulations for production and finance, and the means used to transmit information, particularly visual information, between a painter and his client. At the heart of the book is an analysis of the… Read More

"When I have a little money, I buy books; and if I have any left, I buy food and clothes."
― Erasmus
In 1509, Erasmus composed his famous essay 'In Praise of Folly', or 'Encomium Moraie', which was a satirical attack on superstitions and other unconventional traditions in European society. Since its inception in the early 16th-century, it is considered one of the most important works of the Renaissance and helped develop early stages of the Protestant Reformation.
Erasmus uses satire to examine doctrine and corruption within the Catholic Church, even though Erasmus was devoted deeply to Catholicism. He concludes 'In Praise of Folly' with statements of supporting Christian Protestantism.
This highly desirable 1728 first Honore edition was translated by Gueudeville and is noteworthy for its inclusion of the artwork of Hans Holein – folding and in-text engravings depicting mythological and strange creatures!

He describes French architecture, numismatics, politics, military, war, along with dozens of other topics. Other topics include Louis's interest in science and poetry, attempts at gothic art, music, and sculpture, Catholic devotion, and 13th-century French society.
This beautiful first edition of Wallon's 'Saint Louis' features an impressive collection of artworks from various artists including Paquier, Toussaint, Garcia, Hurel, Meaulle, and Soupey; nine of which are chromolithographs.
