Gorgeously illustrated with paintings and photographs of soldiers, cavalry, and officials from pre-historic Persia up to the 1970s. Languages: English, French, Farsi. Size: 32 x 22.3cm. Stiff wraps. 22.5 x 31.5cm. Unpaginated (about 194 pages). The 2,500 year celebration of the Persian Empire consisted of an elaborate set of festivities that took place on 12-16 October 1971 on the occasion of the 2,500th anniversary of the founding of the Iranian monarchy (Persian Empire) by Cyrus the Great. The intent of the celebration was to demonstrate Iran's long history and to showcase its contemporary advancements under Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the Shah of Iran. Also enclosed is an A5-sized 4 page colour leaflet related to the event, titled "Narsh-E Rustam", which folds out to show a plan of the Central Council. CONDITION: The wraps are near fine with minor signs of shelfwear, and creasing to the spine. The contents are in near fine condition, with a couple of pages coming slightly loose. Black lacquer boards; front board illustrated with scene of a woman and a man painted in gilt and red. None of the postcards have been used and none have dates of publication. Some of the cards were produced by Tonboya in Yokohama; the firm was actively publishing hand-colored postcards from about 1910 to about 1930. The first postcard is a view of Mt. Fuji with a foreground illustration painted in gilt and black. The next two are portraits of Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken in black with a gilt emblem above each of their heads. The hand-colored views are of streets scenes, temples, and parks in Yohohama, Kamakura, Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, and Kamata; a number include geishas. There are two views of women in Yoshiwara.
