London: Harmsworth Bros., Limited, 1898-1899. [Literary Magazine] FIRST APPEARANCE. Octavo (25 x 18cm), pp.viii; 672. With black and white in-text illustrations throughout. Publisher's DELUXE BINDING of leather-backed dark green boards with extra gilt decoration to spine, tan endpapers, edges marbled (the standard binding was mid-green cloth. Contents clean, joints slightly rubbed. Near fine. This early tale of adventure is WSC's only short story, and together with the novel 'Savrola' constitutes Churchill's entire fictional oeuvre. The story did not reappear until after the author's death, (June 1965, 'The Argosy'), nearly seven decades after the first publication. This issue also contains the short story 'A Princess In Green and Tan' by Arthur Preston, featuring six illustrations from a young Arthur Rackham, drawn very much in the popular Sidney Paget (Sherlock Holmes) style, familiar to readers of the rival 'Strand Magazine', as well as two stories by Richard Marsh.

Summary: "The Bone People, first published in 1984 by Spiral, New Zealand. About this book: The Bone People is an unusual story of love. It is unusual in the telling, the subject matter, and the form of love that the story depicts. This is in no way a romance; it is filled with violence, fear, and twisted emotions. At the story's core, however, are three people who struggle very hard to figure out what love is and how to find it. Hulme won New Zealand's Pegasus Prize for Literature (1984) for The Bone People.
