Georgetown, CA: Talisman Press, 1963. First Edition, Limited to 100 copies. SIGNED by the author. Two Volumes. 8vo. [8], 9-457; 458-825 pp. Index. Two folding sheets displaying four maps in rear pocket of Vol. I; one fold-out map & errata sheet in Vol II; black & white illustrations. Black leather spines over marbled paper covered boards; housed in publisher's slipcase which shows a hint of wear. A fine set. 'An edited compilation of primary sources from the first year of significant migration to Oregon and California, divided generally by geographic area and trail. These volumes are perhaps the richest gathering of material relating to the beginnings of overland travel.' - Saunders 44. Volume I is principally made up of overland diaries, which for the most part have never been published. Volume II presents letters written along the trail by such notable figures as Edwin Bryant, William H. Russell, James Frazier Reed, Tamsen Donner, Charles T. Stanton, Virginia Reed, James Applegate and more, shedding new light on the Donner tragedy, the pioneering of the Hastings and Applegate Cutoffs, and other events of the year. (Mintz pg. 97).
