About This Item

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1911. Originally conceived as a three-act play, this was the last novel James completed before his death. The plott concerns the buying-up of Britich art treasures by wealthy Americans - a bit of prescience that would eventually come to fruition some fifty years after. This is a Near Fine copy of the First American Edition (simultaneous issue in England by Methuen). Not a common title. Olive cloth binding with gilt titling on the spine; the cover is titled and ruled in gilt. Clean text; 261 pages; the top-edge is gilt, others rough-cut. Hints of bumping to the bottom corners; the spine has faded to tan but the gilt remains bright. An attractive copy. No dustjacket; in an archival plastic protector.. First American Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
