About This Item

Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1863. First Edition. Original cloth. Very Good+. 8vo. Pp. xi, [2] 10-398 followed by one page of publisher ads. Original ribbed brown cloth, blindstamped with gilt lettering on spine. Spine just a touch faded, with negligible wear to extremities. A notably bright, sturdy copy. First edition, first state: "Mysterious" on page 145, line 23, is printed as "myterious"; one page of page of ads at page [399].

A delightful collection of Hawthorne's observations drawn from the literary pilgrimages he pursued following his service as Consul in Liverpool and Manchester. Hawthorne's son, Julian, remarked that his father preferred living in England, but returned to America because he wished his children to be educated in the U.S. This copy with sharp corners; now protected with a removable, clear archival sleeve. BAL, 7626, CLARK, A24.1.a.
