Original brown fair cloth boards with faded gilt text on the spine. Cloth is faded and spotted with some bubbling and wrinkles. Binding is in good condition. The inside pages are intact with some staining on the upper right hand corner and foxing throughout. Pencil scribbles on the inside cover page and the tissue guard: "This is the most silly book I've ever read/You don't say so." Rear of the book contains two advertising pages. The first page of Our Mutual Friend states "Book I", all four "books" are bound in this copy which is printed in double column format. Shelf 2
Synopsis
Our Mutual Friend (written in the years 1864–65) is the last novel completed by Charles Dickens and is in many ways one of his most sophisticated works, combining deep psychological insight with rich social analysis. At one level it centres on, in the words of critic J. Hillis Miller, "money, money, money, and what money can make of life" but in a deeper sense it's also about 'human values'.
