About This Item
xii+241 pages with figures, tables, maps, appendices and index. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 6 1/4") bound in original publisher's green cloth with silver lettering to spine and decorative cover. First edition. By the middle of the eighteenth century the Catholic church was by far the single most powerful institution in New Spain, rivaling even the royal government. The power of the church, political, spiritual, and economic, was to pose a major threat to the central government of Mexico well into the twentieth century. Yet this institution did not appear fully developed but underwent a long process of growth, beginning in the decades following Cortes's conquest of the Aztec empire. In order better to understand the process through which the church attained such power, this study will look at the origins of the economic power of the church in colonial Mexico. Condition: Heal corners bumped else a near fine copy.
