About This Item
New York: Americna Heritage Publishing Co., Inc, 1966. First Thus. Small folio. Near Fina/Near Fine. The Birds of America is a book by naturalist and painter John James Audubon, containing illustrations of a wide variety of birds of the United States. It was first published as a series in sections between 1827 and 1838, in Edinburgh and London. Not all of the specimens illustrated in the work were collected by Audubon himself; some were sent to him by John Kirk Townsend, who had collected them on Nathaniel Jarvis Wyeth's 1834 expedition with Thomas Nuttall.
This edition is the first by American Heritage and includes:
"431 Exact Reproductions in Full Color from the Original Collection".
It measures 13 1/2" x 11" and weighs nearly 10 lb.
Near fine in blue cloth with gilt titles on the spine and Audubon's initials in gilt on the front cover. Just very slight bumping of the spine ends. No other marks or damage at all. The clipped DJ shows just very slight edge wear.
A truly classic American art volume.
Note: This is a very heavy (10 lb.) volume and so may require additional shipping cost, particularly if sent to any destination outside the US..
