About This Item

London: L. Upcott Gill , [1890]. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 8.5" by 6" . Not Stated . Scarce first edition of this comprehensive botanical work dedicated to orchids by W. Watson. First edition of this work, second impression identified through lack of date to title page and advertising leaf to front citing "By the Author of 'Orchids'". The second revised edition followed in 1893. A scarce volume. A popular and most comprehensive guide to orchids and their culture by William Watson, British botanist and horticulturist, gardener at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew from 1879. Assisted by W. Bean. With half title. Featuring numerous engravings in text as well as forty-three full page plates of engravings, some folding, and six chromolithographic plates. Collation varies, the same edition copy was seen with eight and twelve coloured plates, though most commonly found with eight. Six leaves of advertising leaves to rear. Rebacked in full cloth with the original spine and boards restored, featuring a lovely coloured illustration to front, renewed endpapers. Externally smart with minor shelf wear, bumped to head and tail of spine, rubbing to back strip, minor damp to rear board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally very clean thoughout. Very Good
