Paris, Rothschild, 1880. Royal 8vo (27.6 x 18.0 cm). viii, 348 pp.; 50 fine chromolithographed plates, finished by hand, and 244 figures in the text. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards. Spine with five raised bands and gilt title. Marbled endpapers. = A much better than usual copy of this rare and well-illustrated work on orchids. Usually found quite foxed, but in this copy the plates are clean and there is only some faint foxing in the text. Uncut. A very good copy in a nice binding. Nissen BBI, 1572.

Covering the orchids that were cultivated in Europe at that time, having been sent mostly from South America, Asia, etc, most of which are still cultivated today. The detailed text (in French) includes much on each species, where they were found, collections, use and culture. The colored plates are 'beautifully done' [Glikbarg, the Orchid Observed #22].
