About This Item

London and New York: Wingate, 1950. First Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. The interest in this book lies mainly in the handwritten gift inscription from Louis St. Laurent on the half title page: "For the edification of Jack Pickersgill, London, January 4th, 1951." It was a very personal gift from the St. Laurent, Prime Minister of Canada, to Jack Pickersgill, one of his close associates who had a personal interest in German intelligence during WW II. Frank Pickersgill, his brother, had been parachuted into France by the SOE,where he was arrested by the Germans, interrogated, tortured, and finally executed at Buchenwald. The interior of the book is clean and tight, with slightly darkened pages, but no wear or damage. The orange cloth covers are fresh, with light edgewear. The dust jacket is also in very good condition, with light edgewear and a bit of chipping to the top and bottom of the spine. The attached scan gives a better idea of condition. The jacket is now in a protective mylar cover.
