New York: Doubleday, Page & Co, 1905. Cloth. Good. xv, 484, [1] p. 27 cm. Tipped-in colour frontispiece and 51 b&w plates. Green cloth hardcover with blank impressing. Spine ends repaired. Wrinkling to spine cloth. Wear to corners. Hinges repaired internally. Ink signature on front free endpaper.
Title continues: "An Account of Lhasa and the Country and People of Central Tibet and of the Progress of the Mission sent there by the English Government in the Year 1903-4." Perceval Landon (1868-1927) was an English writer and journalist, now best remembered for his classic ghost story "Thurnley Abbey." In 19031904, he was special correspondent of the London Times on a British military expedition to Lhasa, Tibet - hence this book. The impressed swastika on the front cover is an eastern symbol for life, the four swirling arms representing the four directions of the universe.
