Front free endpaper and flyleaf signed by several members of a women's organization; some browning to edges and endpapers. Very good condition. Afrikaans text. (Nienaber I, p. 329) Pieter Johannes Schoeman was born in Utrecht, in northern KwaZulu-Natal, in 1904, and grew up with the veld as his classroom, not attending any formal school until the age of fourteen. However, he became an anthropologist and specialist in African languages, obtaining his doctorate from Stellenbosch University in 1934, when he also travelled to London to study under Bronislaw Malinowski. In "Op die groot spore", as in his other works, Schoeman exhibits an intimate knowledge of Zulu life and of hunting. The title story relates how an experienced hunter accompanies the Zulu king's hunting expedition. .
