About This Item
SPECIAL NOTE: The present example is only one of about 10 copies which includes a dust jacket custom-made for this book (not issued by Grolier). Unless you buy this copy, you won't find any other copies available with this dust jacket.
The catalogue was published in conjunction with the Grolier's Club's Children's Book Exhibit which occurred from December, 2014 to Februrary, 2015 in which 100 books of famous children's literature were displayed in their first editions. This catalogue offers a level of bibliography rarely seen in the description of children's books, and was inspired by the scholarly catalogue produced for the Morgan Library and Museum's pivotal children's book exhibition Be Merry and Wise, co-curated by Brian Alderson and Felix de Marez Oyens. The catalogue was published in an edition of 1,000 hardcover trade copies in handsome, indigo-blue cloth, titled in gilt, and with the Grolier Club arms in gilt on the upper cover. (A lower-run signed-limited edition was also published, which now fetches $2500 on the second-hand market.) The book covers nearly 350 years of children's book production beginning with a German book printed in 1658, and ending with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone first published in 1997. The book includes spreads of each example, and pictures of their corresponding first editions. Many of the books you loved as a child are here, including many you may not have known. Includes the classics Robinson Crusoe, Gulliver's Travels, Songs of Innocence and Experience by William Blake, The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien, and Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. If it's a famous children's book, it's most likely here. According to curator Chris Locker, the team involved with the project, which began circa 2010 and ended with the closing of the exhibit in early 2015, defined "children" (12 and under), literature, and "famous" (defined as a book which withstood several generations, but not necessarily to the present generation). And these books are the result. While anyone can create their own list, this list was carefully compiled and researched.
Fine in Fine Dust Jacket, a beautiful copy, with only a tiny hint of dust on the covers, which seems to be a common problem with this book. The dust jacket is now present to protect the book.
NOTE: All modern books with dust jackets come with dust jacket covers.
