About This Item

Paris: Bernard Grasset, 1953. Softcover. Near Fine. Reprint. Printed green wrappers. Pages toned, seamless repair to a tear, near fine. French play based on an early German novella. The adaptation into English was produced on Broadway featuring Audrey Hepburn in the title role as Ondine, the water nymph; Mel Ferrer, and Marian Seldes. This copy Inscribed by Giraudoux's widow to Tony Award-winning actress Seldes: "Por Marian Seldes, Charmante Bertha, Suzanne Jean Giraudoux." *Ondine* is a French play of a water nymph Ondine and a knight, Bitter Hans, who rejects his respectable fiancee Bertha to be with *Ondine*, and the folly and tragedy that results from their union. This American version of *Ondine* won the 1954 New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Play, and contributed to Audrey Hepburn's breakout year when she won the Tony Award for Best Leading Actress and the Academy Award for Best Actress for *Roman Holiday* that same year.
