About This Item
Chicago: Donohue & Henneberry, 1892. Presumed First Edition, First printing. Hardcover. as is. 419, [1], v, [7] pages. Cover worn. Boards weak. Fep through copyright page separated by present. Pencil notation on dedication page states J. A. McDougal March 3--99. This is believed to be the J. A. McDougal who operated J.A. McDougall Carriage & Wagon Shop in Lakota, Nelson County. Note: Internet reference is to McDougall with two "l"s but holographically spelled with one 'l'. Occasional notes throughout and on the rear fep, presumably in Mr. McDougal's hand. Other underlining, marginal marks noted. Illustration between pages 288 and 289 separated but present. Notations on illustration related to the horse Comanche. Photograph laid in appears to be a different view of the image between pages 32 and 33. A portion of the illustration between pages 338 and 339 has been cut out and laid back in. It is an image of an Indian burial place with a notation of its location west of a river as late as 1883. Also laid in a picture of Sitting Bull, and his daughter, Standing Holy, which is in the List of Illustrations (no page reference). There is a notation, presumably by Mr. McDougal, that in 1887 he sold Sitting Bull a bay horse for $110.00. Also laid in is a, small photograph of Circling Bear, with no notation, which is in the List of Illustrations (no page reference). Location of the removed images not found. This book contains a lot of good information on Custer, Sitting Bull, and The battle of the Little Big Horn. * * * The cover is a dark green cloth, printed with a gilt title on cover and spine, frontis, table of contents 33 illustrations, index. * * * This is High spot # 69 as listed by Luther in appendix I. of Custeriana, a Field Guide to Custer Literature.
