About This Item
Weston, Mass.: M & S Press, 1984. First edition thus. Edited by Daniel G. Siegel. A folio-sized volume, bound in quarter navy-blue "Niger goat" leather over marbled boards and housed in the original cloth-covered slipcase. Number 58 of 275 copies bound as such. (An additional 55 were bound in full leather.) Over 40% of Orwell's handwritten fourth draft is reproduced in facsimile with a typescript, including corrections, on opposing pages. According to Orwell's second wife, Sonia (as quoted in Peter Davidson's introduction), "George always threw away all his mss., letters etc, so his actual working methods are very badly documented." those that have survived are generally typescript, making the handwritten manuscript particularly interesting. A fine copy in near fine slipcase with one of the open corners starting but still tight. UNACCOUNTABLY SCARCE
