About This Item
Chicago: D.Dalziel Book. Poor. Hardcover. pictorial paper over boards, n.d., [1884?], 12 pages., col. frontis., [12] p. of col. plates, patterned endpapers, Cover title: NIAGARA REVISITED;12 years after Their wedding journey by the Hoosac Tunnel route written by William Dean Howells, Published by D. Dalziel Chicago., published by arrangement with James R. Osgood & Co.,Publishers, Boston, Plates printed on both sides., Advertisements [16 p.] bound in the end of the volume. BAL 9615; Wright, American fiction, v. III, 1876-1900, no. 2824; Kirk, Essays in literary history, 1960. pp. 177-195. A rare book, a fair speculation would state that there are 15 copies extant. Certainly one of the most rare of Howells works and one of the most rare of works on Niagara. This copy has a varient from the copy held by Columbia Univ.and other copies perused in that the Columbia copy and others bare the line "Reprinted, with Alterations, from the Atlantic Monthly, May 1883" in place of the line in this copy stating, " published by arrangement with James R. Osgood & Co.,Publishers, Boston." CONDITION: spine is chipped and separating with some loss, overall cover soil, edges worn, lower edge of all text pages have one inch deep evidence of moisture at bottom edges, pp 1 is separated, front free endpaper and title page is misaligned (not a serious flaw, easily corrected) , traces of child's scribbles on endpapers whcih have been all but removed by non harmful erasure, The edition was published by arrangement with Osgood but apparently D. Dalziel and the Fitchburg RR had an arrangemnt to share profits mutually. When Howells discovered that the Fitchburg RR had sullied his essay with sixteen pp of mostly railroad advertising but, to add injury, refused to pay he threatened to sue and this forced the company to destroy the issue. This copy and a few others survived the destruction thus a rare item. Size: 4 to., (23 cm.).
