About This Item

Thick 8vo, cloth with photographic inset of Washington, illustrated 428 pp. Binding slightly soiled and worn, several pages from first signature are loose, and top cover joint somewhat weak. Also, some internal spotting and foxing, but in good condition overall. The introduction describes some of the progress made by Negroes over the past century. However, despite significant improvement since the Civil War, the author maintains African Americans are over looked and treated as second class citizens. This work, which is a compilation of essays from important African American leaders of that period, gives a historical sketch of the history of African Americans. The exploits of Negro soldiers during the Spanish-American war get considerable attention, but the work also talks about their role in other American conflicts. This includes representation in the French and Indian War, as well as the American Revolution. Additionally, the book contains a lot of valuable biographical information about some of the African American leaders of that time.
