Description:
This is a very scarce program for the 1st American performance of the opera "MADAM BUTTERFLY" by Giacomo Puccini. The title page of the program states: "First Performance in America and First Presentation in English on October 15th, 1906, at the Columbia Theatre, Washington, D.C." Published by Boosey & Co., New York.Puccini wrote five versions of the opera. The original two-act version, which was presented at the world premiere at La Scala on 17 February 1904, was withdrawn after the disastrous premiere. Puccini then substantially rewrote it, this time in three acts. This second version[was performed on 28 May 1904 in Brescia, where it was a great success. It was this second version that premiered in the United States in 1906, first in Washington, D.C., in October, and then in New York in November, performed by Henry Savage's New English Opera Company (so named because it performed in English-language translations).Condition:Mostly clean covers and spine with only a few small stains to top edge of… Read More

Credited photographers are: Ginger Gamage, Forbes, Jay Dee (Ft. Worth, TX), V. Sladon, (NYC), and John Lindquist. Some of the photos have writing verso identifying the subjects, including one of Svetlova with Claudio Arrau and Mantovani. Several appear to be other noted people in the world of dance. And the 1930's photos, several of which are signed, appear to be friends of Svetlovas. Marina Svetlova ( 1923-2009) had a carrer in ballet that began as a child in 1931 and carried into the 1960's. She was a soloist with the Original Ballet Russe and a ballerina with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet. Description:
Limited signed and numbered edition, 94 of 250, revised edition. Marlene Dietrich's alphabet of all her favourite things. This book is a window to the interior life of the German-American Hollywood star, from her political preoccupations, to her views on marriage. From an entry on Goethe: "My idol. [...] He sanctioned love without condition, without pride", to a definition of love: "Love for the joy of loving, and not for the offerings of someone else's heart", this book shows the depths and range of an important figure of the twentieth century, celebrated not only for her artistry and glamour, but also for her humanitarian efforts, which won her Medal Freedom for her stance against Nazism and her support of Allied Troops. A special revised copy. Includes photographs of Dietrich throughout her life.
Hardcover, 183 pp. White cloth binding in pristine condition. Original dust jacket, very slightly worn on edges. Toning on the spine. Overall in very good condition.
