About This Item
Germany, c.1550. . A small engraving on laid paper, measuring 52 x 72 mm. One tiny hole in satyrs arm, tape residue and paper repair on reverse. Trimmed right up to or very slightly within plate lines. The image is of a nude female figure (Deianira) sitting on the lap of a satyr. This is not the first state, but is a reverse copy after Sebald Beham, with the female figure at left, facing right. The tablet in the upper right corner is without the monogram; there is no scenery behind. See Pauli 110b, who refers to it as a "Gegenseitige Kopie". The British Museum has another variant (their number: 1850,0612.266) which is interesting to compare. Sebald, who may have trained under Durer, was one of a group who are referred to as the Northern Renaissance Little Masters, so named because of their practice of producing exquisite small-scale engravings. This image is an uncommon one.
