New York: Van Evrie, Horton and Co, 1861. First Book Edition. Hardcover. xvi, 17-339 pages, [3] ads. In Very Good minus condition. Bound in publisher's embossed brown cloth, gilt titling to spine. Light shelfwear and rubbing, corners bumped, fraying to head and tail of spine. Spine titling faded. Frontispiece with racist caricatures offsetting onto title page. Ex-libris, with bookplate to front pastedown, red ink stamp to pages 17, 99, 197, 245, and 339 verso. Ink name to second free endpaper. RW consignment. Shelved case 1. A malevolent and racist treatise, it was first published as a far shorter pamphlet in 1853. This First Book Edition was published during the Civil War and covers Van Evrie's white supremacist views on race and slavery in a pseudoscientific attempt to rationalize slavery. 1376385.
