About This Item
Early book on blind education.
The "Blinden-Institut in Pest" was the fist institution for the blind in the Habsburg Monarchy and it is among the earliest of such schools in Europe. The school opened in 1826 and in 1836 it moved to its new building and apparently the publication of this book followed the important occasion.
Edited by the director of the school Anton Joseph Doležálek whose intention was to put the emphasis on music education according to the predominant thought of the 19th century that the only possible future for blind children is becoming a musician.
The book contains the constitution of the institute, lists the nineteen pupils (officially twenty), five girls and fourteen boys, the house rules, the dress code and the preyers and songs for different times of the day.
As illustrations, the lithograph and copper plates, show the floor plan of the building, the iron bedstead used in the institution, the school timetable for each day of the week (mostly music classes) and a plate printed on both sides with the notes and lyrics of the preyer songs.
The income on this brochure has been devoted to establish a foundation for poor blind children, as it is printed on the rear wrappers.
Early and scarce publication about blind education, especially with such detailed content. WorldCat locates only one copy in institutional holdings in Europe, no copies in the US.
