During apartheid, "coloured" was a legally defined racial classification, codified in 1950. It was the category used for everyone who was not designated white or Black, including people who were mixed-race, and people descended from East Asians brought to South Africa as slaves and indentured workers. Richard E. van der Ross, who was categorized as Coloured under apartheid, was a political organizer in the 1960s, the first president of the Labour Party of South Africa, and eventually the Rector and Vice-Chancellor of the University of the Western Cape.
