About This Item
New York: Brentano's, 1908. Here is one of the most celebrated locked-room mysteries, the first in his series featuring the amateur detective Joseph Rouletabille. Leroux went on to write his next effort: "The Phantom of the Opera." Originally published in France; this is a Very good copy of the First American Edition. [Hubin, 253] Orange cloth binding with titling and a questioning figure in black; titling in black on the spine. Clean text; frontis illustration; 307 pages. Mild wear to the margins; rubbing to the head and foot of the spine. The spine is darkened and the titling has faded, although it remains readable. The orange cloth shows moderate soiling, and has some pencil marking on the covers. Within, there is a contemporary (1909) previous-owner signature noting that the book was "Read on the ocean." The same pencil has scribbled it out and added a few spare marks [Quercus assumes this to be juvenalia]. This is a basically sound copy, if not the most beautiful, of an important and iconic work. In an archival plastic protector.. First American Edition.. Decorative Cloth. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
