About This Item

Alan Sutton, Dursley, Gloucestershire, 1978. First Edition. Hardcover. Good Condition/Good. Illustrator: Illustrated. Prologue: The Building of a Legend: A Critical Study of Sources, list of illustrations and bibliography of Principal Sources used. The text is illustrated with reproductions of contemporary illustrations and the occasional modern black-and-white photograph. Purple coloured boards with gilt coloured titles to the back strip. Illustrated dustwrapper with red and white coloured titles to the front panel and back strip. There has been a long held belief that Richard III murdered his nephews (The Princes in the Tower) to gain control of the throne of England. Even contemporarily this was a rumour only, and, flies in the face of Richard's character as a ruler. In this the author " ... gathers together an immense amount of historical material, drawing on sources from contemporary to modern times, and incorporating unique research. Among this is the discovery of a highly significant tradition preserved in the Tyrell family, which encouraged the author to investigate papers and Tyrell will is not examined before. <snip> the result is a work which makes an important new contribution to the subject and absorbing the investigates characters, political alliances, and psychological motivations. It cannot be ignored by historians seeking one of the most baffling murder mysteries in our history: a study in power politics which suggests "Watergate" cover-up of its time." – from the front fold over panel blurb. Rubbing of the book corners and softening of the back strip edges. Sunning of the lower book edges. Faint offset tanning to the end pages and there are some splotches to the first few and last few pages of the book. Age toning of the text block edges and a little to the pages. Previous owners name to the top edge of the front paste-down. Chipping of the top right hand corner of the front panel, a little to the top back strip edge; there is a 2 inch tear to the top left hand corner of the front panel and a small tear to the top right hand corner of the rear panel. Rubbing of the dustwrapper edges and there is sunning to the front panel and back strip. Browning and a few marks to the verso. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 215, [3] pages,.
