Hollywood: Samuel Goldwyn Productions, 1-14 June 1949.. [1],135 leaves. Quarto. Mimeographed typescript, printed on rectos only of white, blue and pink paper, bradbound in mimeographed wrappers. Wrappers heavily chipped and stained, some offset and staining from the dark blue wrappers to the margins of the earliest and final leaves, otherwise textually in very good order. A rare production script of the sole adaptation to the screen of any work by J. D. Salinger, based loosely on his short story, "Uncle Wiggly in Connecticut," which appeared in the NEW YORKER in March of 1948. This draft is shot through with dated revises on colored papers from the two week period noted above, and according to a pencil note in a contemporary hand, the production started shooting on 13 June and finished on 29 July. The film was directed by Mark Robson, and starred Dana Andrews and Susan Hayward. Though the screenwriters brought to bear on the project were proven talents (including CASABLANCA among their many credits), their fleshing out of Salinger's short story and transposition of it to the screen evidently proved an embittering experience for the young writer, and no other authorized film adaptation of Salinger's work has been undertaken. Any paper associated with this film has proven elusive over the years, and scripts particularly so.
