Posthumous essay collection. Lanier (1842-1881) was a Georgian poet, musician, and professor of literature at Johns Hopkins, known for his innovative theoretical connections between poetry and music. "Lanier's verse is unique in American literature as the only poetry whose musical qualities come from direct, practical, artistic experience" (ANB). BAL 11276.
