About This Item
London: Chatto and Windus, 1971. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Near fine. Elizabeth Taylor's exquisitely drawn character study of eccentricity in old age is a sharp and witty portrait of genteel postwar English life facing the changes taking shape in the 60s . . . Much of the reader's joy lies in the exquisite subtlety in Taylor's depiction of all the relationships, the sharp brevity of her wit, and the apparently effortless way the plot unfolds"-Robert McCrum, from the Guardian list of the 100 best novels.
In 2021, Geoff Dyer wrote a review of the novel for the New York Times Book Review entitled, "Was Elizabeth Taylor the Best British Novelist of the Postwar Era?"
This Booker shortlisted novel was made into a memorable film starring acclaimed British actor Dame Joan Ann Plowright, the Baroness Olivier, the widow of Laurence Olivier. A scarce first edition. First edition (first printing). A near fine copy (ownership name dated 1972) in a near fine, dust jacket that is mildly tanned and faded at the spine, as is typical with this book.
