About This Item
London: Macmillan, 1983. Hardcover. 160p., first edition in 9x5.5 inch in maroon papered boards gilt and enclosed in the glossy stylized dust jacket. Very good condition, with casing having an inconspicuous nick at the heel, this dittoed in the jacket, plus a touch of edgewear. Smart novel, smartly bound: otherwise sound, and entirely clean and unmarked. Dedication page directs us to remember William Shawn and Vincent Canby (everybody knows who they are) and Nolan Osborne. Ogling Nolan, we find that author Gilliatt was John Osborne's third wife (of five) and Nolan was their daughter (RIP rather young). 'Mortal Matters' strikes us as a kind of 'Travels with My Aunt', a more realistic version, but like the Greene novel, doggedly humorous.
