[London]: Gaiety Theatre, [1886]., [1886].. Very good. - Octavo, softcover bound in light tan self-wrappers printed in brown. There are a few tiny, light stains to the front wrap. The contents are printed in brown & include cast lists for the play & an introductory farce plus 5 pages of ads, some of them illustrated with vignettes in brown. Stitched into the center of the program is a souvenir program containing identical text and ads but with a gilt-framed & gilt-lettered color pictorial cover depicting a man in a red silk coat holding back a curtain revealing a trio of cavorting cupids, as well as a gilt-ruled rear cover. Tipped onto the third page of the souvenir program is a notice announcing changes to the cast owing to the indisposition of 2 actors. The souvenir program is printed by Waterlow and Sons Limited. Very good.
Richard Henry, the author of "Monte Cristo, Jr.", is a pseudonym credited on collaborative works by Richard Butler and Henry Chance Newton. Other works credited to "Richard Henry" include "Frankenstein, or the Vampire's Victim", a parody of Mary Shelley's novel, presented at the Gaiety Theate in 1887.
The farce which precedes the main offering is "Dimity's Dilemma, A New Farce by Malcolm C. Salaman". The cast changes announced in the souvenir program necessitate the substitution of a different farce, "No. 1 Round the Corner".
