About This Item

Chicago: University of Chicago, 1987. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. First printing. Fine in fine dust jacket. Hardcover. xviii+ 122 pp. with index. Illustrations. The movement of the 1920s known as the Harlem Renaissance has often been discussed for its supposed failure to produce "modern" art on the order of the British and Anglo-American works of the same period. The author eloquently disputes this view and elaborates a notion of distinctvely Afro-American modernism, In doing so, he develops a new way of looking at, and listening to, black creativity in America.
