"Au Hammam"/ Signed "Ettinger, 1959"
Men's bathhouse scene.
Oil painting on repurposed sign canvas (light weave cotton), 36 x 29 inches, signed by the artist upper left; portion of hand painted sign lettering remains on back; makeshift frame with artist's name and Paris address and an intriguing printed label — EXPRESSIONNISTES.
Painting is in need of restoration and re-stretching, in as found condition— separating from the frame, nails rusted, edges worn, some soiling, etc. Glad to send more images if needed.
Stephen Ettinger, 1924-2002, was an American who spent some time in France in the 1950's, before settling into a career teaching in a NYC private school. He earned a B.A. from the New School for Social Research, New York, and an M.S.A. from the École des Arts Décoratifs, Paris.
A figural painting with strong abstract expressionist influences and a palette reminiscent of early Richard Diebenkorn. Written on the frame is Au Hammam, or Turkish baths, and a Rue du Dragon address, 6th arrondissement--an area known for its diverse community of artists, philosophers, and North African dissidents during the Algerian War. It was also home to a progressive bookstore/gallery, The Dragon Gallery, known for exhibiting Giacometti, Matta, Dubuffet and many other important artists.
Feel free to text or call if you have any questions or would like more images, shipping information, etc. 203-232-4338.. Thank you.
