About This Item
British Museum, 1894 4to (26 cm), [6], XLIII pp, 65 plates. Green Jansenist Morocco, commissioned by H. Sotheran & Co, London, with a gilt-lettered spine, inner gilt dentelles, and marbled endpapers (spine sunned, joints slightly rubbed). The book includes a collotype facsimile of the miniatures and borders from the Sforza Hours (British Library, London, Add. MS 34294). Painted by the illuminator Giovanni Pietro Birago for Bona Sforza, widow of Galeazzo Sforza, Duke of Milan, around 1490, the manuscript remained unfinished for 30 years until Margaret of Austria, Regent of the Netherlands, commissioned its completion in 1517-20 from the artist Gerard Horenbout. The introduction is provided by George F. Warner.
