About This Item
Garden City: Doubleday, Doran & Co, 1944. Hardcover. 12mo. Green cloth with black spine lettering, pictorial dust jacket. 155pp. Near fine/very good. Small inoffensive stain on rear endpaper; jacket lightly edgeworn, with single edge chip. A tight and attractive first edition wartime travelogue by the British actor, singer, playwright and all-around wit as he traveled to entertain allied troops during World War Two and (to cite front jacket panel) "reports his impressions of the war in the Mediterranean." Very lovely and very uncommon in such a spiffy jacket, whose front panel graphics show a stylized aerial view of the Mediterranean and Sicily, Gibraltar, Malta and Beirut.
