This is a first edition of Elder David Bartley's allegorical religious novel about a pious young girl. Bartley was a Primitive Baptist author who published numerous evangelical treatises, with Mercy Deering being among the scarcest. Upon its publication, The Primitive Monitor and Church Advocate praised Mercy Deering: "Next after the Bible and Bunyan's [Pilgrim's Progress], it would be difficult to find a more suitable or excellent book for parents to put into the hands of their children, in this vain, worldly, Mammon-worshiping age."
