From the wealthy Mellon family of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he established a business empire before he became the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury from 1921 to 1932, under Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover. He thus presided over the Roaring Twenties and Great Crash of 1929.
